What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers help to diminish facial lines and restore volume and fullness in the face.

As we age, our faces naturally lose subcutaneous fat. The facial muscles are then working closer to the skin surface, so smile lines and crow’s feet become more apparent. The facial skin also stretches a bit, adding to this loss of facial volume. Other factors that affect the facial skin include sun exposure, heredity, and lifestyle.

Dermal fillers can be used to:

  • Plump thin lips
  • Enhance shallow contours
  • Soften facial creases and wrinkles
  • Improve the appearance of recessed scars

Dermal fillers can be very helpful in those with early signs of aging, or as a value-added part of facial rejuvenation surgery.

Dermal Filler Types

Hyaluronic Acid
What are hyaluronic acid injections?

If you want to reduce facial wrinkles and lines, hyaluronic acid may be a good choice as a dermal filler because of its compatibility with the human body. In fact, this substance is found in almost every single living thing. In humans, it acts as a network that transfers essential nutrients from the bloodstream to skin cells.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in your body. High concentrations are found in soft connective tissues and in the fluid surrounding your eyes. It’s also in some cartilage and joint fluids, as well as skin tissue. It is extracted and reformulated and now has become one of the most popular kinds of injectable fillers. Hyaluronic acid is not derived from animal sources.

When this gel is injected, it acts like an inflated cushion to support facial structures and tissues that may have lost volume or elasticity due to normal aging. It also brings water to the surface of skin to keep it looking fresh and supple.

In the last few decades, various synthetic forms of hyaluronic acid have been developed and used to correct disorders in the fields of rheumatology, ophthalmology, and wound repair. More recently, synthetic forms of hyaluronic acid are being manufactured for use in face augmentation.

Over time, your skin loses elasticity and moisture, which contributes to moderate to severe parentheses lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth. While serums and creams can help moisturize the skin’s surface, JUVÉDERM® XC adds volume to smooth these lines and folds, to help give you the natural-looking, long-lasting results you want. It is the only filler proven to last up to 1 year when injected into wrinkles and folds.

Whether you’ve noticed your lips thinning over time, or simply want fuller lips, JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC can give you natural-looking results that last. It is the only filler proven to last up to 1 year in the lips.

Wrinkles and lines aren’t the only signs of aging. Over time, the cheeks flatten, and the skin may begin to sag. This is caused by a natural loss of volume in the cheek area, or what the experts call age-related midface volume loss. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC is designed to add volume beneath the skin’s surface to lift and contour the cheek area. It is the only filler proven to last up to 2 years when injected into the cheek area.

Restylane-L

Restylane works immediately by adding volume to smooth away wrinkles. A clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid, Restylane is specifically formulated to act like your body’s own hyaluronic acid, and eventually breaks down naturally. Restylane will help to maintain lip fullness for up to 6 months.

Poly-L-Lactic Acid

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) collagen stimulator works with your body within the deep dermis, rather than topically, to help revitalize collagen production and help restore your skin’s inner structure and volume. As its microparticles are absorbed, they help stimulate collagen production. Rebuilt collagen strands begin gradually helping to restore facial volume and the look of fullness to wrinkles and folds.

Sculptra Aesthetic

Sculptra is an injectable material containing microparticles of poly-L-lactic acid. When injected, stimulates collagen production. After the Sculptra is dissolved by the body, the collagen production process begins. Once the production is complete, wrinkles will be reduced and volume will be added to the injected areas.

While during the aging process, our face gradually loses the fat that provides us with the smooth curves and volume that are typical of a more youthful appearance. Sculptra is designed to give the face the subtle volume replacement and reduce the wrinkles that occur with aging. Results appear gradually over the treatment regime (typically three injections over the course of three to four months) and can last up to two years.
