All you need to know about botox

Botox is a prescription substance that is injected into muscles to improve the look of wrinkles on the face, excess skin on the neck, and other features. The substance is botulinum toxin, which is created from bacteria, and it is marketed under brand names such as Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin.

How does it work?

Botox prevents muscles from contracting. It does so by blocking acetylcholine, the chemical released from nerve endings that causes muscles to contract.

How is it used?

Often used to reduce facial wrinkles, botox is the most common non-surgical cosmetic procedure in the world. It also can be used to treat heavy sweating, migraine headaches, and a condition called parotid gland hypertrophy (swelling of certain salivary glands).

Where is botox commonly injected to improve facial wrinkles?

  • Frown lines between the brows
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Smile lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Bunny lines
  • Corners of the mouth (to elevate them)
  • Dimpled chin
  • Vertical neck lines

Do the injections hurt?

A very fine needle is used to limit discomfort. Lidocaine cream may be applied to temporarily numb the skin. Some patients feel little discomfort and choose to skip the lidocaine cream.

How long does it take to see results?

Results are seen within 2-3 days in most cases.

How long does botox last?

Each patient responds differently, but the average treatment is effective for 3-4 months.

Are there any side effects or limitations after injection?

  • Some patients may experience a headache following injection. This usually goes away without needing treatment.
  • Muscles sometimes respond unevenly to injections, which may result in asymmetry (imbalance). This usually can be corrected with a small “touchup” injection.
  • Overtreatment of the forehead may result in a drooping brow. After the botox wears off, the brow position will return to normal.
  • Upper eyelid droop may occur if injections on the brow are too low. This can be treated with eye drops prescribed by your physician.
  • Limitations on activity following treatment can vary by physician. Some doctors recommend no exercise for the remainder of the day, others recommend avoiding lying down for the four hours following treatment, and some do not restrict their patients.
